Thought I’d do a fun, light article to switch things up here.
As you can see from the title, it’s about what you can do to feel “rich” right now.
I quoted rich because I’m using the very loose definition the majority of people have of rich – that feeling of being well off, of enjoying life with plenty of money to do it.
People think they need to make a certain amount before they feel rich but what they forget is that it’s not the event - it’s they themselves that make them feel rich.
So why wait for the event?
Why not feel rich right now?
So what’s the first thing you can do to do just that?
Before I say what that is, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when people think of someone who gets rich? Let’s say for example, a person who wins the lotto.
The first thing that comes to mind when they think of that lotto winner?
Now they can quit that that awful job so they can have...
And the answer is:
FREE TIME!
It’s not necessarily the money that people focus on when they think of someone getting rich –
it’s the time it frees up.
Time is way more valuable than money.
Anybody can make more money.
Nobody can create more time.
So the logic follows that if you can carve out some more leisure time for yourself, you can start feeling rich immediately. Think about it. Isn’t that why people work? So they can have leisure time?
Instead of feeling like you’re on the hamster wheel running all the time, getting nowhere, just get off it.
Set aside for one day a week, a nice, generous block of time, just for you.
Not one hour.
Not two.
Make it at least a solid three hours. At the very least.
Just for you.
Forget about the bills, things you have to do by tomorrow, what you have to do 4 days later, just do what nourishes you.
If it’s hiking, go hike.
If it’s walking by the beach, feeling the sand between the toes and the tide washing up against your legs, do that.
If it’s getting a massage, watching a movie, eating a nice meal, reading at a bookstore, do all that.
Having just that window, that bubble of time, just for yourself, it feels very luxurious and gives you a “taste” of what it’s like to feel “rich”.
Not many people have this free time.
They might make a lot of money, but they have no time to enjoy it as they’re working 80 hours a week for it.
Someone might say:
Yeah, but since they make a lot, they can quit and have a lot of time off.
Not really.
If they quit, no cash flow comes in and they need cash flow to cover all the expenses for the expensive things they bought, so they don’t quit and keep on working, never enjoying, so in reality, they’ve imprisoned themselves.
So that’s the first thing you can do. And really milk it. What I mean by that is take care of what needs to be taken care of so you can enjoy this time worry free. Do everything you need to do so that there nothing’s on your mind when you have this free time.
Second thing to do to start feeling “rich” is to indulge in a variety of sporadic experiences. Key words are variety and sporadic experiences.
First off, when people think “rich”, they think of expensive possessions but as we all know, we acclimate and get used to them over time and it gets old, plus in reality, those possessions are just hidden money leaks.
Buy a boat – it’s nice the first week, but over time you get used to it, and don’t even use it.
Meanwhile, you have to pay insurance, docking fees, maintenance, repair, etc., and all that costs money – which costs time, which cuts into your leisure time, which doesn’t make you that rich at all even more.
How about renting a boat for the day and fishing the high seas – getting the experience of it. Then move on to another experience. Maybe jet skiing.
And then another experience like scuba diving.
You’ll become rich in experiences, which is returns far more value than being tied down by expensive possessions.
Obviously, don’t put all these experiences on credit cards. That will just enslave you. Save up for them as well as for everything you do in your free time as well.
The third thing you can do is very simple and it’s deceptively easy, but the logic is there.
Ask yourself:
What’s ONE thing in your life that wouldn’t give away for a million dollars?
Your health? Husband? Wife? Kids? Talents? Friends?
If you’re not willing to part with that one thing for a million bucks, guess what?
In your books, you have at least a million in value in your life RIGHT NOW.
Feels pretty rich now doesn’t it?
While this was a fun little article, if you look closely behind the ideas of each of these strategies, you’ll see some deeper ideas on what it means to be truly rich.
