If you're a first time visitor, I highly encourage you to click here to learn more about this site in order for you to get the VERY BEST VALUE out of it. Thank you for visiting!
I always love hearing about another reader success story. This one comes from across the globe from a reader in China by the name of Effie.
I got the email a couple of weeks back and was impressed by how Effie was able to benefit from the M.I.Ts and apply them to make great progress in learning English.
I wanted to share Effie’s story here and Effie has graciously agreed to let me.
Please keep in mind English is not Effie’s first language. I did not change any of the words because I figured the effect would be more profound on the reader.
Dear Kim,
I’m a Chinese student. It is such a wonderful experience to read your articles. It help myself to reflect on my life,go far on the way to achieve my goal.I really appreciate it.AND I found that I have used a theory you’ve recommened in M.I.T.
Well ,you know ,as English is not my mother tongue, and I could not find a really working method of learning English ,I find it so hard to make progress. But I tried to analyse my way of learning it and find a better way. I find it so important to learn English with interest! Frankly speaking, I don’t have any passion in reading masterpieces which is the most recommened way of learning English by my teachers and friends. Then what should I do?
First I tried to find out what I really interest in. I totally like articles which are close to my life such as those about how to be more beautiful, to be more passive, to make the most use of my money & .etc!
Then I tried my best to search the articles. I live in a small town & it’s impossible to get access to the original publications. But I have the Internet! I can read the English blogs and surf the English website! I have insist in the way of learning English for a few months. & I really make progress . It is not a suffering to get used to the English web. And I can read the articles faster.
Honestly I haven’t master English very well,so PLEASE forgive any
mistakes in the above.
By analysing the course of making progress in learning english, I found I really follow some theories you’ve recommened in M.I.T.
KEEP THE GOAL IN MIND. I really desire to learn English well, whatever the ultimate motivate is.Maybe I just like english.Maybe I will be more competitive in the futre if I’ve master it! Maybe just because I can directly read english articles and watch english movies and listen to english songs. But I keep this goal in mind whenever and wherever.
FOLLOW YOUR ACTIONS WITH ANALYSIS. I’ve been learning english for many years. but I haven’t master it very well! I began to analyse the methods I’ve used in the past. So I gave up some which just didn’t work any more. In the meantime I tried to find some working methods.
GIVE IT A SHOT! I didn’t know whether those new methods can really help me to make progress. But I just tried. As you’ve said you would never know what would happen until you tried.
FOCUSE ON THE GRADUAL PROGRESS AND IMPROVEMENTS I’AMMAKEING AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. I’ve noticed the progress I’ve made. I feel totally good when I view the english web page while my friends inclined to say “It’s terrible! I can understand nothing!” I used to act like them but now I’ve changed! Maybe that’s not a big progress but I feel totally good about it. That’s why I want to share my happiness with you!
THERE’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE ANOTHER GOAL AROUND THE CORNER. I remember these words too! Now I try to improve my writing too!^_^
Of course I’ve used many other theories you’ve recommened in M.I.T. (I’ve read so much.^_^)
Best wishes!
Effie
I want to thank Effie for taking the time to write that and for sharing. I really appreciate it!
Anybody who has tried learning a second language can attest to the fact that it’s definitely not an easy thing, but if you read what Effie wrote, she got her ideas clearly across, which is what really matters the most. Never mind the spelling and grammatical errors – anybody who’s learning a new language will have them at first. Being able to communicate your ideas is the most important thing. The rest is just details.
Effie gives some great tips in terms of reading what interests you as you’ll be that much more motivated to read it and learn the language in the process.
By following the advice in the M.I.Ts, Effie is keeping the goal in mind, allowing Effie to see more opportunities that will contribute to making better progress in learning English.
Effie is also seeing what works and what doesn’t and is focusing on doing what does work.
Effie is also feeling good about the progress that’s been made, helping to increase self motivation to the point where Effie is improving written English as well!
I want to point out that the M.I.T’s are effective WHEN YOU HAVE A GOAL IN MIND. If you get the M.I.T’s, but don’t have a goal, it won’t be that effective.
Each M.I.T contains a different idea, or a new way of looking at an old idea, or a question to ask yourself, or a story, etc. The nature of it is truly random.
You never know what kind of M.I.T you will get in terms of format on any given weekday but you will get great ideas and if you apply them like Effie has, you too will be able to make great progress with whatever goal YOU have in mind.
So if you haven’t signed up for the V.I.P newsletter to get the M.I.Ts, now’s the time to do so and join the other thousands in over 120 countries around the world who are getting and benefiting from them as well.

Hiya
I enjoyed reading Effie’s contribution as I am learning a second language whilst living in a foreign country. All the best Effie! You appear to be very good at learning english.
I recognise each of the 5 steps he’s written upon. I’m naturally reevaluating my progress as a result of my interactions with native speakers. Some people are much easier to understand and chat with than others. One very useful tool has been to imagine myself speaking the language fluently and confidently with others (even tho my vocabulary is limited and grammar incomplete.) My ‘fantasy’ does not rely on current competence but the willingness to feel goĂłd about learning and enjoying the expected goal of fluency. Along with the academic structure and real-world practice, it’s working very well for me.

Hi Jens,
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story. It’s great to see you learning a second language as well!
Visualizing, feeling good about learning and enjoying the expected goal of fluency is an excellent way to motivate yourself and make real progress. Thanks for sharing those tools!
