If you're a first time visitor, I highly encourage you to click here to learn more about this site in order for you to get the VERY BEST VALUE out of it. Thank you for visiting!
A couple of months back, a reader by the name of Anil upon discovering this site, started sending me daily emails, updating me on the status of his life and the changes he was making. No reader had really done that before on such a frequent basis so he really stood out from all the other emails I got on a daily basis.
It was a pleasure to see the progress he made and it was also refreshing to see the honesty in the emails, in terms of acknowledging the problems he had in his life. In that respect, I want to quickly share this email I recently received from him, outlining the great progress he has made in dealing with one of the issues he’s been having.
I want to thank Anil for allowing his words to be put on the site for all to read.
“Dear Brian,
I want to share my happy story with you.
It began one morning about a month and a half back when my mood suddenly changed from good to bad, for no apparent reason. I was appalled. Why was my mind behaving like this today morning? And why did it continually behave in this up and down manner without my control? I then had a great realization that set me on the path to recovery - I accepted that I had a problem. I did not know what the name of the problem was, but it was there, and it was ruining my life. I googled for a name for my symptoms. The closest medical term I found was ‘cyclothymia’ - a mild but nevertheless disruptive mood disorder. It felt nice to have a official name for my problem, but the big task now was to solve it. I have had personal experience in the past of the ‘ineffectiveness’ of psychiatric drugs and their problematic side effects, and I was, therefore, not surprised to see that psychiatry was not going to perform as it promised. I then decided to try out the traditional Indian treatment which is called ‘Ayurveda’. I went to a renowned doctor and started taking the medicines prescribed by him. It felt good, and there were no side effects either, but there were no immediate signs of improvement and in about a week’s time, hoping against hope, I also got in touch with a psychotherapist. Since psychotherapy is as much an art as much as a science, I will name this person I met - Dr. Rohit Juneja.
My first two sessions with him were pleasant but there was no lasting breakthrough. However, the day after my third session with him, I started sensing a stronger positive sense inside me. This was about a month back. I’m so so happy to tell you that I have not looked back since. In between, I’ve had some days when the ‘tamasic’ (please look up its meaning) mood has been upon me, but I’ve negotiated my way out of it brilliantly. In some ways I’ve rediscovered my old childhood cheerfulness. And in some other ways, I’ve changed as a person. I’m also happy to inform you that in this period I have been able to successfully get a great new job as well which I am starting next week.
So, what are the tools that have worked for me. I am listing the important points below:
1. Mindfulness: This is the biggest new quality I have developed. I am an observer of my own actions and thoughts all the time. This helps me to stop myself from some habitual negative thought patterns and actions that I had become habituated to. I evaluate all my actions and thoughts. If I get a uncontrollable negative thought or emotion, I avoid the consequent action, and yet I try to seek the reason for my negative reaction.
2. Healing the past: I’ve understood how some difficult incidents in the past created a negative behavior pattern, and the knowledge has been very healing.
3. Accepting the problem: It is very important to reiterate here that my solution happened because I accepted that there was a problem.
I am now back in the zone of happiness. I love your MITs. They are brilliant. Thanks very much.”
Sincerely yours,
Anil
I want to thank Anil again for sharing his story and what has worked for him, as well as for allowing the email to be put on the blog. I really appreciate it.
The reason why I wanted to share this was because I’m sure somebody out there may be dealing with a similar issue that Anil was dealing with and since Anil has outlined what has helped him, those very points may help that person as well.
If you really think about it, human nature is the same anywhere you go. We are all brothers and sisters. The issues that one person might be having, another person might very well be having as well.
Whatever helps one of us, tends to help all of us.
