Do You WANT To Achieve Your Goals For The New Year Or Do You NEED To?

By: Brian Kim - January 1, 2007

If you're a first time visitor, I highly encourage you to click here to learn more about this site in order for you to get the VERY BEST VALUE out of it. Thank you for visiting!

This is the year. The year I’m going to lose that weight, get that new job, go back to school, etc.

365 days later.

No, this is the year. I had some other things to deal with last year. This is going to be THE year. The year I’m going to lose that weight, get that new job, go back to school, etc. We’ve heard it all before haven’t we? From our friends, family members, and maybe even from ourselves.

If only we could bottle up the energy, the resolution, the determination we have the day we set goals for the New Year and have that sustain us throughout the year. That would solve probably THE biggest problem that people have when it comes to their goals for the New Year and that is losing “the sizzle” as time goes by.

Those who set a goal to lose weight start off great. They go to the gym, throw out all the junk food in the fridge, run every morning, but inevitably they slip back after you check with them a week later.

Why do they lose their sizzle? Very simple.

Their desire is not strong enough.

Desire is SO important and it’s often the most important ingredient that’s left out in goal achievement. I’m not talking about desire such as “It would be nice if I could lose 30 pounds this year.” I’m talking about a burning desire. A desire hot enough that it rivals the temperature in the core of our sun. To illustrate why desire is so important, the following is an excerpt from my book discussing the difference between wants and needs as it pertains to desire and achieving your goals.

1. Make it a NEED

We’ve talked about how many people make the common mistake of not growing their desire into a burning one. A lot of people skip this very important step and try to go ahead to achieve their goals, but they can’t seem to do that so they find themselves paralyzed.

The problem is that their desire was weak in the first place. Remember, weak desires bring about weak results. You have to spend time on cultivating your desire till it becomes a raging fire. This is where NEED comes in.

You’ve got to want to achieve your one major definite purpose so bad that it turns into a NEED. You see, needs have much more powerful desires rooted in them because they tap into the fire of primal instincts.

NEEDS are basically wants on steroids.

You’ll find that when people’s needs are met, they start to settle into that dreadful zone known as complacency. Sure, people might want a better job that makes them happier, but they don’t really need it. Their job is sufficient enough for now. It pays the bills and allows them to save a little extra. So it’s not a matter of just wanting it. It’s a matter of wanting it so bad that you need it.

That’s why the previous three exercises, transmutation, love, and listing what you were willing to give up to achieve your one major definite purpose, were used because they are geared toward transforming that want into a need.

Think about it. Needs are very powerful desire triggers. People will do just about anything for needs. Take for example, the need to belong. You’ve seen how powerful this need was in school. Kids will do whatever it takes to fulfill that need, whether it’s adopting the current slang, wearing the same clothes as the other kids, or joining a gang in order to satisfy their need of belonging.

The need to survive is also such a powerful one because it creates a burning desire to live. This explains why so many people are able to bounce back from terminal illness because their burning desire to live is rooted in their need to survive.

When you can equate your one major definite purpose as a NEED, then you’re well on your way.

You’ll find that it’s easy to transform your want to a need, if and only if your want is strong enough. That’s why it’s so crucial that you choose the one major definite purpose that you truly desire to accomplish. The subsequent techniques are all aimed to give you that one extra little push to drive you over the edge and turn that want into a need.

Remember, it’s not enough to say you want it. You’ve got to NEED it.

So how can you do that?

You might have noticed that those whose one major definite purpose was closely linked to the primary needs of human beings often found themselves with a true burning desire. You can do the same by linking your one major definite purpose to the primary needs of human beings and tap into that raging fire of primal instinct.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow proposed in his paper entitled A Theory of Human Motivation, a hierarchy of human needs. The most basic needs were that of physiological needs such as food, water, sex, and sleep. The second level consisted of safety needs, such as security of money, health, and family. The third need comprised of belonging needs, such as friendship, family, and sexual intimacy. The fourth need comprised of esteem needs, such as self-confidence, personal achievement, and respect from others. The subsequent needs involved self actualization.

From this theory, we can infer that the primary level, namely physiological needs, have within them, a burning desire fueled by the primal instinct of survival.

Is it any wonder then why some of those who immigrate to America with nothing in their pockets are able to become so successful while those who grew up in America were not as successful?

The answer lies in the fact that those immigrants needed to survive. They had no money to buy food and water. They had no place to sleep. It was their need for survival that cultivated that burning desire within them to succeed.

Those who grew up in America had no such need. Their needs were met and they had no reason to strive, so they didn’t have the burning desire to succeed to begin with.

It’s all beginning to make sense now isn’t it? Need is the same concept behind “burn your bridges.” You’ll recall Edward Barnes did this. He packed up everything he had and went straight to Edison’s door.

Napoleon Hill also mentioned the story of the general who burned his ships, so that there was no chance of retreat. The general then subsequently went to war and emerged victorious.

People who are on the verge of dying, their bridges are literally burned as well. Their lives are on the line and it really is either live or die for them so they decide to fight back and live. They have no other choice. It’s literally life or death.

Is it any wonder why then that burning your bridges is such a powerful technique to induce a burning desire? It’s because when you do that, you MAKE IT AN ABSOLUTE MUST - AN ABSOLUTE NEED.

So in order to tap into that burning desire, link up your one major definite purpose to the needs mentioned above, preferably starting from the bottom up.

For an even extra push, you can also try projecting into the future by writing how fulfilling your one major definite purpose will fulfill many of your needs down the road, not just one.

You may also have your own personal needs that are important to you that you can link up to the achievement of your one major definite purpose. Since we are all different, I can’t give you any examples of that, but just realize that you can use your personal needs to link to the achievement of your one major definite purpose in order to make it a need.

When you can equate your one major definite purpose as a NEED, then you’re well on your way.

Remember, you’ve got to want it so bad that you turn that want into a NEED.

This is just a very small excerpt from my book The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich. If you’re wondering what The Hidden Secret is all about, it’s just that. It’s the Hidden Secret that Napoleon Hill mentioned in the introduction of his bestselling classic Think and Grow Rich. More specifically, it’s the natural process of achieving any goal you desire (and no, the secret is not just really desiring to achieve your goal to the point where you make it a need; there’s way more to it than just that).
