Why People Get That Empty Feeling - Think Deep

Why People Get That Empty Feeling

You hear the stories. It seems so unfathomable. After a person reaches great success, however you define it, fame, fortune, accomplishments, etc., you hear some of their remarks.

Is this all there is?
Is this what I worked so hard for?
Why does it feel so empty?
So hollow?
What’s going on here?

The typical person thinks everything should be great, that they should be elated, but alas, for some people, such is not the case.

What’s really going on here?

The usual answer here is the analogy of the ladder leaning up against the wrong wall but I want to use another analogy that I think is a better fit.

It basically comes down to people being like trees, but instead of staying rooted, they uproot themselves and go after other “fruits” instead of growing their own.

What do these “fruits” symbolize?

Anything that’s produced based on the roots of a tree.

And what do the roots symbolize?

Purpose.

There are so many different trees with different roots with each root creating its own fruits.

If a person initially decides on a specific purpose, but over time, strays from that and decides to pursue other “fruits” and obtains them, that’s when you get that empty feeling.

That person didn’t develop their own roots. They “uprooted” themselves so they could pursue other fruits.

Contrast that with a person who decides on a purpose, sets their roots down, grows them deep, and produces their own fruit, that empty feeling isn’t there.

It’s the weirdest trap that most people fall into.

Purpose is so clear in the beginning, but it’s SO easily forgotten as various other shiny fruits tend to distract that person on their journey.

The classic example is a person taking a job that has flex time so they could spend more time with their family.

The original purpose of that job revolved around spending more time with family.

But down the line, that person gets offered promotions, which requires more work and travel, along with higher pay and status, so those “fruits” of higher pay and status begin to beckon at that person, and the person begins to “uproot” himself to get those fruits, forgetting about his/her own roots in first place.

Then upon getting those other fruits, he feels empty. Uprooted. Tossed and turned about by the events of his life.

Where did it all go wrong?

The money and the status seems so empty compared to the cost of a broken family.

It’s so important from time to time to REMIND ourselves of our original purpose. There’s WAY too many distractions down the road that will attempt to deviate you, to try to get you to uproot yourself.

In some instances, some people never even have roots to begin with.

They confuse them with fruits, thinking they’re the same thing but they’re not.

Then some people THINK they have roots, but it’s really not their own roots so they never really grow their own fruits.

When you decide on a purpose that is your own after careful consideration, you set down roots. As you pursue your purpose, you grow them deeper. Other fruits will beckon at you but you will ignore them.

It’s not that those other fruits are “bad” – just not the fruits you’re going after.

And over time, you’ll develop congruence in your life and bear the respective fruits of your roots.

Fruits that won’t make you feel empty inside, but will fill you up and make you full of life.
